Look for relevant, current experience

Ask whether the lawyer handles your type of matter and works with the relevant court, office, or locality. An old directory entry can provide a name, but it does not establish present availability or suitability. The UK government publishes a Yemen lawyers page dating from 2013. Treat such listings as starting points for independent checks, rather than an endorsement of a particular practitioner.

Describe the parties before sharing the file

Give the names of the people and businesses involved so the lawyer can consider whether an existing relationship creates a conflict. Agree on a suitable way to share sensitive material before sending identity documents or family records. Explain whether you are asking for yourself, a business, or another person; authority to give instructions should be clear from the beginning.

Define the first assignment

Request a written description of the initial work. Reviewing papers, giving an opinion, negotiating, and attending a hearing are different tasks. Ask what is included, what needs separate approval, and what information is still missing. A focused first assignment helps both sides understand the immediate objective without assuming that every later stage has already been accepted.

Make the payment arrangement understandable

Discuss the currency, payment method, expected expenses, and circumstances that could change the estimate. Ask for receipts and an explanation of any advance payment. Distinguish professional fees from translation, delivery, or official charges. A promise of success is not a substitute for a clear account of the proposed work, likely obstacles, and choices available to you.

Agree how the matter will be followed

Choose a communication method you can use reliably, including a backup if contact is interrupted. Ask who will handle the file and how documents will be returned. Before the meeting ends, write down the next action, who is responsible, and any deadline requiring immediate confirmation. Keep your own copies of instructions and important updates in one place.

Before the consultation

Bring the essentials.

  • A short account of the problem and its location.
  • Names of the parties and any existing representatives.
  • A written scope, fee explanation and contact plan.
  • Copies of notices showing dates or deadlines.
