Understand the particular process

Ask who the mediator is, how they were selected, and what role they play. UNDP has described community mediation committees established in districts of Aden for certain local disputes. That example does not establish that the same programme or procedure operates in Sana’a. Confirm the actual arrangement available to you, including costs, language, and the involvement of any other institution.

Consider whether participation is appropriate

Explain any threats, intimidation, serious imbalance, or concern about speaking freely to an independent adviser before attending. Ask about support, separate discussions, and ways to pause the process. Do not assume that an invitation means a meeting is safe or that every issue can be settled by agreement. Matters involving violence or urgent protection can require a different response.

Bring a short account and workable proposals

Prepare a neutral timeline and a small set of relevant documents. Identify the issues that need a decision, then consider specific proposals: an agreed payment schedule, a document handover, or another practical step. Avoid promising something you cannot deliver. It can help to distinguish your immediate needs from points that remain uncertain or require professional assessment.

Clarify confidentiality and continuing deadlines

Ask how information will be recorded, shared, or used if no agreement is reached. Do not assume that every conversation has the same confidentiality protection. Separately confirm whether a court, filing, or response deadline continues to run. Taking part in discussions should not be treated as proof that another process has stopped or that your interests are otherwise protected.

Review the words of the agreement

Before signing, ask an independent lawyer to explain the obligations, dates, consequences of non-performance, and any release of claims. Confirm who must sign and whether further steps are needed for legal effect or enforcement. A friendly understanding can still leave important details unresolved. Keep the complete signed agreement and a record of what each participant later does.

Before the consultation

Bring the essentials.

  • The organiser’s role and process explained.
  • Any safety or participation concerns discussed.
  • A short timeline and practical proposals.
  • Independent review before signing a settlement.
